Winston Smith works at the Ministry of Truth and begins to doubt everything he rewrites.

1984 by George Orwell is set in Oceania, a state where the Party decides what is true and Big Brother watches through telescreens. For his job, Winston alters old newspaper reports so that the past always fits neatly with the present. In secret he buys a diary and writes down what he really thinks, and that alone is enough for the Thought Police. When he meets Julia, a bond forms that in this world is simply forbidden.

You read this classic in one sitting and it stays with you for days afterwards: it is dystopia, love story and political thriller all at once. If you recognise something of the atmosphere of Fahrenheit 451 or The Handmaid's Tale, this is the book for you. This is an English-language hardcover edition, in which you meet concepts such as newspeak and doublethink in Orwell's own words.

How our reviews work

After an order or an event you get an email with your own link. A review left through that link gets the Verified buyer label. Readers in our app can rate a book too. They only get that label if they bought the book from us. We read every text before it goes online. We only remove swearing, personal details and spam. We show positive and negative reviews alike. The score is the average of all stars.
