What is Danse Macabre about?

The story of Danse Macabre by master storyteller Paul van Loon begins on 13 October 1876. Florian and Isabella are absolutely forbidden to go to the abbey: according to their stepfather Damian, mysterious things happen there. They secretly go anyway, on the evening the orchestra plays the Danse Macabre. Hidden behind the choir stalls, Florian and Isabella watch a black shadow sweep over the musicians as the abbey begins to collapse. Debris falls all around them, and they have to escape! That is the start of an adventure full of fear, on the run from the Unnameable that is searching for Isabella. Why? What does the Unnameable want from her?

In Danse Macabre, Paul van Loon tells the true story of the bloodcurdling events that took place before the ghostly spectacle that awaits in the mysterious abbey. The book about the new Efteling attraction of the same name, for readers aged 9 and up. Winner of the Kinderjury 2025.
