What is De reisgenoten about?

The In de Ban van de Ring trilogy laid the foundation for modern fantasy literature and is often named the best book of the twentieth century. J.R.R. Tolkien, professor of Anglo-Saxon at the University of Oxford, imagined a complete world for this work, with its own history, geography, languages and mythology.

Hobbits are little people who live in tidy holes under the ground. They love good food and are not very adventurous by nature. Of course there are always exceptions. When Frodo receives a ring as a gift from his eccentric uncle Bilbo Baggins, he cannot suspect that this is the beginning of a great adventure. The wizard Gandalf explains to him that it is no ordinary ring; it is the One Ring, made by the Dark Lord Sauron to rule the world. And as long as the Ring is not destroyed, that threat will remain.

With a group of cheerful companions, Frodo travels to Rivendell, where the Council of Elrond will decide the fate of the One Ring. The Council sends the Fellowship of the Ring out to throw the trinket into the fires of Mount Doom. A gruelling journey begins.
