What is Lampje about?

This is a story about the sea. About mysterious sea creatures and fierce pirates. About the Admiral's Black House, where they say a monster lives. About a grey lighthouse on an island that is only just attached to the mainland. About Lampje, the lighthouse keeper's daughter, who climbs the sixty-one steps every evening to light the lamp. About a stormy evening when the matches run out and everything goes wrong.

But above all about being brave and being able to do more than you ever thought possible.

Lampje is the writing debut of Annet Schaap (1965). Since 1991 the successful illustrator has provided drawings for 250 children's books, but she had never ventured to write a children's book herself. Until, travelling in America, she saw a lonely grey lighthouse that she simply had to write a children's book about. Annet Schaap always wanted to be an illustrator, or a writer, or an explorer. She studied at two art academies and a writing school. Her book Lampje won the Gouden Griffel, the Woutertje Pieterse Prijs and the Nienke van Hichtum-prijs. In 2019 her book De boom met het oor was published, with illustrations by Philip Hopman.
