Loose leaf tea

Loose-leaf tea is tea that doesn't come in a tea bag, and ours is all premium: black tea, green tea, white tea, oolong, rooibos, honeybush, herbal tea, chai and single origin Darjeeling. The blends come in pouches of 60 or 50 grams, or in illustrated 85-gram storage tins with a double lid.

Everything is in our shop at Van Oldenbarneveltstraat 142A in Rotterdam, where you can smell each tea before you choose. There's room to sit down with a pot of tea and your current read, or the book you've just bought.

What is loose leaf tea?

Supermarket tea bags often contain finely ground tea dust, also known as fannings, and that turns bitter quickly. Loose-leaf tea consists of real tea leaves, flowers, herbs and coarse pieces of fruit.

Because loose-leaf tea isn't squeezed into a tight little bag, all the ingredients have room to unfold in the hot water. That gives a deeper, richer flavour. Loose-leaf tea doesn't just mean tea blends, but also caffeine-free herbal and fruit infusions, with flavours like hibiscus, lemongrass or vanilla. With a tea strainer or filter you decide how much to use, so every cup is exactly as strong as you like.

How much loose leaf tea do you use per cup?

Our guideline is 3 grams per cup of about 220-250 ml, and 12 to 15 grams per litre. For herbal tea and fruit blends you can be a little more generous, towards 4 grams.

Every product shows the brewing advice, with the amount, the steeping time and the water temperature. That temperature matters more than you might think: white tea likes around 60 to 65 degrees, green tea around 70, while black tea and herbs can take 100.

Which types of tea do we have?

Black tea, green tea, white tea, oolong, rooibos, honeybush, herbal tea, chai and single origin Darjeeling. Plus fruit blends and flavoured blends.

Our blends carry names from stories, but every product simply states what you're buying: the type of tea, the ingredients and the brewing advice.

Frequently asked questions about loose-leaf tea

What is the difference between loose leaf tea and tea bags?

A bag usually contains finely ground leaf, which releases its flavour faster but also turns bitter sooner. Loose leaf has room to unfurl and releases its flavour in a more layered way. With loose leaf tea, you also know exactly what's in it, because the leaves, flowers and pieces of fruit are visible.

How many grams of loose leaf tea go in a cup?

About 3 grams per cup of 220 to 250 ml, which is a well-filled teaspoon. For a litre, allow 12 to 15 grams. With airy herbs and fruit blends you need a little more volume for the same weight.

What's the best way to store loose leaf tea?

Dark, dry, cool and airtight, and away from strong-smelling things like coffee or spices, because tea absorbs smells. That's why our tea pouches and tins seal airtight. Ideally, keep them in a closed, dark cupboard.

Do I need special equipment for loose leaf tea?

No. A small sieve, a tea filter or a pot with a built-in sieve is enough. What does help is a kettle where you can set the temperature, because green and white tea turn bitter if the water is too hot.

Can I steep loose leaf tea twice?

With pure tea types such as oolong, white tea and Pu Erh, that's certainly possible, and the second infusion often tastes different from the first. With fruit blends and herbal infusions, the flavour is usually spent after one steep.

Can I smell the tea in the shop before I choose?

Yes, that's what the glass jars are for. Feel free to drop by at Van Oldenbarneveltstraat 142A in Rotterdam and take your time. You can also order a pot of tea and stay a while with a book. We're happy to help you choose a tea that suits you.
