In Mississippi, 1933, three women form an alliance their little town will certainly not appreciate.

The Calamity Club by Kathryn Stockett, known for The Help, is set in Oxford, Mississippi during the Great Depression. Meg is eleven, lives in the orphanage and has been fending for herself since her mother disappeared at Christmas. Birdie finally wants to confront her well-off sister about something, and Charlie, after a great loss, has almost nothing left to lose. Their lives become entwined in a little club of women whom nobody takes seriously, and who precisely because of that achieve more than anyone expected.

Historical fiction with humour, warmth and a sharp eye for hypocrisy: in a town like this, small acts of resistance turn out to be quite dangerous. Read this if you loved The Help or Where the Crawdads Sing, or stories about women taking back the helm of their own lives. English-language hardcover of more than 650 pages, to disappear into for a long weekend.

How our reviews work

After an order or an event you get an email with your own link. A review left through that link gets the Verified buyer label. Readers in our app can rate a book too. They only get that label if they bought the book from us. We read every text before it goes online. We only remove swearing, personal details and spam. We show positive and negative reviews alike. The score is the average of all stars.
