The Unicorn Hunters

To hide her secret engagement, a young duchess takes her entire court on a unicorn hunt.

The Unicorn Hunters by Katherine Arden is set in late fifteenth-century Brittany, where Anne stands alone at the helm after her father's death. France wants to annex her land and the king wants her hand; she refuses to simply give away her father's legacy and secretly becomes engaged to his greatest enemy. To keep that arrangement out of sight of magical eyes, she devises a hunting party in the enchanted forest. Then a real unicorn appears, and a wounded stranger steps out from between the trees.

Historical fantasy from the author of the Winternight trilogy: political scheming, folk tales and fairy-tale magic that constantly get in each other's way. Arden writes coolly and precisely, with a sharp eye for how little room a young ruler was given in that century. This English hardcover suits readers who loved Uprooted by Naomi Novik.
