In what order do you read the ACOTAR series?

Read them in the order in which they were published. The Dutch title comes first, followed by the English one.

  1. Hof van doorns en rozen, A Court of Thorns and Roses
  2. Hof van mist en woede, A Court of Mist and Fury
  3. Hof van vleugels en verwoesting, A Court of Wings and Ruin
  4. Hof van ijs en sterren, A Court of Frost and Starlight, a short novella set after book 3
  5. Hof van zilveren vlammen, A Court of Silver Flames
  6. Hof van versplinterde harmonieën, A Court of Splintered Harmony, out 27 October 2026
  7. Hof van vergane melodieën, A Court of Forgotten Melody, out 12 January 2027

Books 1 to 4 follow Feyre. From book 5 the story shifts to her sister Nesta, and that shift isn't a side step: it's where the storyline that plays out in books 6 and 7 begins.

Do you read ACOTAR in English or in Dutch?

Either works. The English books are published by Bloomsbury, the Dutch ones by Van Goor under the name Hof van doorns en rozen. Books 6 and 7 come out in both languages on the same day, so even if you read in Dutch, you don't have to wait for the translation.

Want to start in one go? Then the English box set with books 1 to 5 is a lovely way to bring the whole series home.

What is the Valkyrie Cycle?

The ACOTAR series by Sarah J. Maas is one continuous story, divided into four movements. Book 6 forms Movement I, while book 7 covers Movements II and III. Movement IV is still in development, so the story doesn't end with book 7.

Book 5 also plays an important part in this. That's where we meet the Valkyries, who are central to the new story arc.

Where do you start if you don't know the series yet?

With book 1, Hof van doorns en rozen (A Court of Thorns and Roses). Feyre kills a wolf in the forest and is taken to Prythian for it, the realm beyond the wall where the faeries live. What begins as a punishment becomes a story about power, courts and who you become when you can't go back.

Frequently asked questions about the ACOTAR series

How many books are in the ACOTAR series?

Seven at the moment. Books 1 through 5 have been published, book 6 is out on 27 October 2026 and book 7 on 12 January 2027. Book 4 is a short novella. Since Movement IV of the Valkyrie Cycle is still being written, at least one more book will follow after book 7.

Do you need to read Hof van ijs en sterren, or can you skip it?

You can skip it without losing the main storyline, but then you'll miss the build-up to book 5. It's a short novella set around the Winter Solstice, after book 3, that shows how the characters fare after the war.

When do ACOTAR 6 and 7 come out?

Book 6, A Court of Splintered Harmony, comes out on Tuesday 27 October 2026. Book 7, A Court of Forgotten Melody, on Tuesday 12 January 2027. The Dutch translations come out on the same days. Both are available to pre-order from us.

What's the difference between a regular edition and a special edition?

The text is the same. A special edition has a coloured cover and sprayed edges, and is usually a hardcover. Books 1 to 5 are also published in Dutch as special editions.

From what age is ACOTAR suitable?

The series started as young adult and becomes more adult with every book. From book 2 onwards there are explicit scenes, and there is violence. We recommend 16 and older. Not sure about a gift? Pop in and we'll happily tell you the difference between the books.

Can I look at the books in the shop first?

Yes. The series is in our shop at Van Oldenbarneveltstraat 142A in Rotterdam, English and Dutch side by side, with the special editions alongside them. Handy if you want to see what sprayed edges actually look like.

How does pre-ordering work at Tea & Tales?

You order and pay now, and around the release date we ship your book, or it's ready for you in the shop. Is there something else in your order? Then we'll send everything together on the release date, so you get it all in one parcel. If you choose the Midnight Release, you pick up your book in the shop on release night.
